What oath, pledge, vow or promise did you give last week? What prompted you to give it?

Transition: 

Oaths are important to God, He gives some insight into them for us today, let’s dig in.

Bring the Word: 
  • Read Matthew 5:33-36
    • What does Jesus clearly state about oaths?
    • Is this surprising to you?
  • Read Matthew 5:37
    • Why do you think Jesus says anything more than yes or no is from the “evil one”?
    • Where does deceit and dishonesty come from?
  • Read Numbers 30:2
    • Why do you think this scripture is so forceful about vows or oaths?
    • What is at the heart of a vow, oath, pledge?
    • We must exercise caution with what we say, pledge, vow or promise!

Truth = God already knows the truth, but do you and I?

What is the wage (payment) for sin?

What is the gift of God?

How does this scripture speak to you today in light of our study?
