Small Group Discussion Guide

Sermon Series: Raising the Bar
Sermon Title:
Righteousness

Break the Ice:

Why do we have a tendency to want to set a standard for rightness (righteousness) for others?

Transition:

Brad said, that God’s standard of rightness (righteousness) is higher than ours, let’s look at the what scripture says today

Bring the Word:
  • Read Matthew 5:38-42
    • How does Jesus raise the bar in these verses?
    • What is the main theme of this scripture?
    • What four subjects did Jesus highlight here?
Bring it Home:

THREE POINTS TO REMEMBER

A. The RIghteousness of God is Higher than Mankind’s

  • Read Romans 12:19-20
    • When you and I do what is good and suffer, what happens?
    • Why do you think this glorifies God?

B. The Righteousness of God Embraces Suffering

Read 1 Peter 2:2-23

What were we called to?

Who left us an example to follow when we suffer?

What three things does scripture say Jesus “did not”?

What one thing did Jesus “do”?

C. The Righteousness of God is possible for us, because of the Cross!

Read 1 Peter 2:24

Why did Jesus bear our sins on the tree?

How were we healed in verse 24?

To be spiritually healed and made “right” with God means what to you?

Peter gives a beautiful picture of what has happened to you and me in verse 25,

How do you apply that to your life today?
