BREAK THE ICE:

Have you ever thought that you were a stranger in this world? Well, today we will

answer that question.

Transition: We start a new series “STRANGE” today in 1 Peter, so let’s Dig In !

DIG IN:

Read 1 Peter 1:1-2

How did Peter refer to the recipients in verse 1?

  1. They are _________.
  2. Living as. ________, dispersed abroad.

In verse 2 what part does the God-Trinity play in salvation?

Truth – All part’s of the Godhead plays a distinct role in your and my salvation.

And as chosen (saved) we have our citizenship in Heaven, but are living for a short time

as (stranger/exiles) on earth.

Read Philippians 3:20-21

What does this verse say?

Insight – “A stranger is a citizen of one place but living in another place!

Read 1 Peter 2:11. How does Peter further clarify this point?

THREE POINTS TO CONSIDER LIVING IN A STRANGE LAND, THAT”S NOT OUR HOME

A. Live UNATTACHED from your former way of life

Truth – Because of God’s mercy we are given a new life through Christ Jesus

vv. 1-4 defines our former way of life, before salvation. What did it look like?

B. Live UNTETHERED to material stuff

Read verse 4. What kind of inheritance do we have in Christ? What are the 3 adjectives used?

Transition:

So we have seen that we are citizens of heaven, who are strangers living in a broken and fading world. With that in mind, we are to . . .

  1. Live unattached from our former way of living
  2. Live untethered to material stuff, and thirdly. . . .

C. Live UNSHAKEN by suffering and trials

Read vv. 6

What truth do we see in this verse about our life on earth?

What result in verse 7 do trials and suffering offer?

Read Romans 5:3-4 – How does Paul further clarity the result of suffering?

Read 2 Corinthians 4:17 – What is the truth in this verse?

Summation of the lesson:

  • we are strangers living in a strange land, our citizenship is not on earth, but Heaven!
  • according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, and the sprinkled blood of Jesus Christ we are saved from this world!
  • we have an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading kept in heaven
  • God guards our salvation through faith to be revealed at Jesus’ appearance
  • Our faith “if necessary” is tested through trials and suffering to bring praise, glory and honor to Jesus Christ
