Sermon Series: Strange
Sermon Title: Submission
BREAK THE ICE:
Why do you think the word “submission” has such a bad rap today?
Transition: We continue our series today with “Strange Submission”, as we learn more about our life in Christ, so let’s Dig In !
DIG IN:
Theme of our study today . . .
Practically living for God. Or another way to put it, how to follow Jesus in your everyday life.
So as we read these verses there are three domains to consider in our everyday living
- Our Relationship towards the State or Government
- Our Relationship towards Supervisors or Work
- Our Relationship towards Spouses or Marriage
Read 1 Peter 2:13-17
What domain do these verses relate to?
What are a few words that give us insight to government?
According to v 14, who elevates or raises up governors?
Read verse 15 again . . .
What is God’s will for you and me towards the government?
In verse 17, Peter gives us 4 specific ways to ____ good.
1.
2.
3.
4.
So the first point today is . . .
A. Submission to Christ doesn’t exempt us from submission to others (the government)
Read 1 Peter 2:12 How are we to conduct ourselves in the world?
Transition: The first domain was our relationship with the government,
Now let’s look at the domain of relating to supervisors.
Read 1 Peter 2:18-25
In verse 19 what is the outcome of our reverent submission to our boss, that might bring suffering?
The second point to consider today is . . .
B. Submission to others (supervisors) doesn’t trump or eclipse ones submission to Christ
Read vv. 21-22,24, who was our example of suffering?
When Jesus suffered and was insulted, what was his response in verse 23?
Read v. 20b According to this verse, what brings favor with God?
Transition: So relating to the government and to one’s boss, has a common theme found in
vv. 15 and 20b . . . DOING WHAT IS GOOD !!
This brings us to the third point today,
C. Submission to others (spouses) is evidence of submission to Christ!
DIG DEEPER:
Let’s Read 3:1-7
In v. 1, what do the words “in the same way” refer to?
Let’s look at vv. 1-2, and 7
What strikes you regarding how wives and husbands are to relate to one another?
Read verse 6 again – What is also the theme with spouses mutual submission, just as was with
submission to government or supervisors?
Summation of our lesson today:
- Submission to Christ doesn’t exempt us from submission to government
- Submission to supervisors doesn’t eclipse one’s submission to Christ
- Submission to spouses is evidence of submission to Christ
