Small Group Discussion Guide

Sermon Series: Unshaken
Sermon Title:
Do This Even More!

BREAK THE ICE:

Should Christians be loud or quiet? Busy-bodies or minding their own business?

Today we continue the Unshaken series and we will look at three “even” more

characteristics of a Christian.

Read 1 Thess. 4:1b . . . as you . . .

Paul exhorts the Thessalonian believers. “as you are doing, do this even more”!

Transition:

Read 1 Thess. 4:10b-12a

What Three Even More’s do we in this passage?

  1. Seek _________________

2. Mind _________________

3. Work _________________

What is the desired outcome that Paul has in mind for these three activities in v. 12b?

DIG IN:

Let’s look at the first one that Pastor Stephen shared

Read 1 Thess 4:11

What does this verse say about work?

A. Work Hard to Provide for Yourself

Read 2 Thess. 3:10-12

What further clarification do we see about work in these three verses?

Truth: Work is an anecdote for “idleness”

Idleness = doing nothing when you should be doing something

Read Eccl. 5:18-19

What benefit does this scripture say about work?

Transition: So weve seen the first “Do Even More is to

Work Hard to Provide for Yourself. The Second “Do Even More” is . . .

B. Mind Your Own Business

In 1 Thess. 4:11, we read “mind your own business”

Read 2 Thess. 3:11

How were some of the Thessalonian believers described?

Truth = You and I have more time to meddle and be a busybody if our hands aren’t working!

Read 1 Pet. 4:15

According to this passage, how serious is meddling to God?

Notice: Meddling is in the same breathe as murderer and thief!

A few questions to assess if we’re “meddling . . .

  1. Is my intrusion productive or destructive?
  2. Am I bringing low-key help or stirring up drama?
  3. * more questions are found on website (under More tab . . . then resources and blog)

Transition: Our Third “Even More” command is . . .

C. Seek To Live a Quiet Life

Read 1 Thess. 4:11 again . . . is “seek” an active or passive verb?

So if it is an active verb then it means it is intentional, just like “Work” and “Mind”

Do you think that “quietness” pleases God?

Read 1 Timothy 2:1-3

In v. 2, what is the foundation for living a tranquil and quiet life?

In v. 3, what is defined as good? And it pleases, whom?

BRING IT HOME:

Personal Application: Inventory time

Of these three commands, which one is your challenge (where do you need to grow)?

Circle One:

  1. Work Hard.
  2. Mind Your Business
  3. Seek a Quiet Life

  • Remember – Living UNSHAKEN means we must be “Intentional” in these 3 areas
