Raising The Bar – Righteousness

Small Group Discussion Guide

Sermon Series: Raising the Bar
Sermon Title:
Righteousness

Break the Ice:

To be righteous is to be Godly, however, scripture says there is none righteous, no not one person. So we have a problem!

Transition:
  • Say: In the message, Andy said, “Raising the bar in righteousness was necessary in and through Jesus Christ”. Let’s understand why in our study today.
Bring the Word:
  • Read Matthew 5:17-20
    • You and I don’t have what it takes. What does verse 20 say about our righteousness?
    • The scribes and Pharisees were very religious, more than likely way more than any of us today.
    • If that’s correct, what is our problem according to Jesus?
  • Read Galatians 3:19
    • The law was given for the sake of transgressions (sins).
    • This passage mentions the law was in effect until “the Seed” came.
    • According to Galatians 3:16 who is that “seed”?
  • Read Romans 3:19-22
    • Are you and I, or for that matter anyone able to be justified by the law? vv. 19-20
    • The knowledge of sin, comes through what means? v 20
    • How does the righteousness of God come? v 22
    • Truth – Jesus came to abolish the law, and create a new pathway to God!
Bring it Home:

TWO POINTS TO REMEMBER

A. Jesus Christ Has What it Takes

  • Read Romans 3:24-26
    • Jesus is the mercy seat by His blood. v 25
    • Through faith in Jesus, you and I are justified v 26
    • To be justified, means what in God’s eyes?
  • Read Hebrews 9:22, 26-27
    • Jesus’ blood sacrifice for you and me, satisfied God’s justice and holiness.
    • Jesus offered Himself once for all, and will bring salvation to those who trust in Him through faith.

B. In Christ You Have What it Takes

  • Read Colossians 2:13-14
    • What is significant to you in these verses?
    • God the Father made you alive in Christ.
    • God the Father forgave us all our trespasses and sins in Christ.
  • What’s your one compelling take-a-way from our study today?
  • Let’s close in prayer.
